Great opening line, courtesy of Charles Johnson and his book Middle Passage. I’ve never read the thing but found the quote in a nice collection of great first lines from novels. Bad me, right?

I’ve considered whether it’s bad form to quote a line from a book I’ve never read in what appears to be the first post on EbT but figured to hell with it… I didn’t write the title of this post, either.

This post and it’s title were automagically populated into the blog when I installed it. Makes sense… damn fine way to greet a blank slate.

Recently, I’ve been dealt a brick of a blank slate. I lost my wife and house as a result of a divorce.

Home. What I thought it was, no more. Cleaned out. A blank slate to find new roots or not, as the case may be.

Commitment. They’ve been reduced. No obligations to another person gives me a blank slate to make some exciting and reckless decisions.

Like any sane man, I’m not willing to dirty up my slate with either of those things any time soon. So, here I am, driven to set off across the globe to paint my slate up something different…
