I'm a pretty big fan of making your own duct tape wallets (you can find out <a href="http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-make-a-duct-tape-wallet" rel="nofollow">how to make a duct tape wallet</a> at this link) not only because its fun and they sell well, but quite literally I've left it at a bar a few times and NO ONES ever touched it until I returned, i guess it just looks like a wad of garbage to an untrained eye lol

The 'Monkey Steals the Peach' is new to me. I'll have to remeber that one. LOL
My treat for any muggers who want to try it is my steel toe cap boots. No muggers have tried yet tho.

@milt - sounds like the yank who tried to rob me one sunny, broad-daylight afternoon in Mexico - simple tip - if there is no weapon in either hand of the would-be mugger - a throat shot does nicely. Or... "<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/theremina/17267938/" rel="nofollow">Monkey-Steals The Peach"</a>

The few times I've have been robbed from (about 4 times in 8 years travel) I'm disapointed to say were never being mugged by a local. They were all fellow western travellers staying in guest houses stealing the occasional clothing or book. One guy in Laos made good friends with me then when I went out for the night and came back he had broken into my room robbed my mp3 player and done a runner from the guest house, also not paying for his accomadation. Not Cool.

ahh, that is quite crafty. i dig it. i ended up ditching the money belt (uncomfortable) and had, somewhat similar to your levi stash, a hidden pocket sewn into the interior of my travel pants.

- not a bad setup - Vago had a run in with customs in CA using duct tape though - apparently it gives off a scent of dope... so be careful.

One of my fav ways to stash a few bills, a credit card (you can cut the sides off to make it fit), important phone list... was to cut the thread on the top of my Levis asstag - making it a new pocket. If you wear a belt it uber hidden. You can also cut the side and give it a stitch or two - to hold things in place.

Aside from keistering your dough (couldn't bear to do it) this is the second safest place on a guy. Even if you had to empty your pockets - no one ever searches behind the levis tag.

most welcome :) i'll admit that at times i asked myself if i was going overboard but nothing ever got stolen so, who's to say? met a few folks that did have stuff swiped, including a pair from ireland who got something slipped into their drinks only to awaken without wallets or passports. it's all about preparedness and peace of mind.

Hey I know you wrote this a long time ago but I just came across it. Great purchases/ideas! I traveled across South America a couple of years ago for 9 months, with the same baggage setup as you but without those precautions you took. I never got mugged or had anything stolen but I knew people who did, and if I do another backpacking trip abroad I'll keep your tactics in mind. THANKS!
